Brevet Brigadier General during the Civil War, he commanded the 10th Minnesota Infantry, served as Acting Assistant Provost Marshal in St. Louis, and was brevetted Brigadier General in 1865 for faithful and meritorious service; he later held key political roles, including U.S. Commissioner of Pensions and U.S. Surveyor of Minnesota.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Corporal in Company H, 2d Minnesota Infantry for action on February 15, 1863 at Nolensville, Tennessee. His citation reads "Was one of a detachment of 16 men who heroically defended a wagon train against the attack of 125 cavalry, repulsed the attack, and saved the train."

Author. She created the "Betsy-Tacy" books, which chronicled the lives of friends 'Betsy Ray' and 'Tacy Kelly' in a series of ten books that traced their lives from 1897 to 1917. The books were published from 1941 to 1955, and each one progressed in a higher reading level than the previous edition.
An American operatic soprano. She made her debut as 'Gilda' in "Rigoletto." She performed often on radio, and helped organize the Los Angeles Opera Guild. She sang in opera abroad and with the Chicago Opera Association, as well as in the Mozart operas given by the Society of American Musicians in New York.
Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. With the outbreak of the Civil War. Pope joined the 8th New York Cavalry as captain of the 1st brigade. He rose through the ranks from captain to major and lieutenant colonel; and was for a time the acting assistant inspector general on the staff of Brigadier General George A. Custer.Â
