Hon. Clifford L. Benedict was a prominent attorney, public official, and political leader in Mankato and Blue Earth County. Born in Wisconsin, he moved with his family to Blue Earth County at a young age, where his father established a farm near Good Thunder. Raised in a frontier environment with limited early educational opportunities, Benedict developed his education through determination and self-study, later attending the Mankato State Normal School.
He began his career in education, teaching in rural schools and later serving as principal in both Good Thunder and Mapleton. While teaching, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1888, after which he established his legal practice in Mankato.
Benedict quickly rose to prominence in public life. In 1890, he was elected Blue Earth County Attorney, serving a total of four years. His growing influence within the Republican Party led to his nomination and election to the Minnesota State Senate in 1898, where he supported legislation aimed at the development and prosperity of the state.
In 1902, he was appointed Postmaster of Mankato, a position he held for many years. He was also active in political organization, serving as manager for congressional campaigns and playing a key role in local and regional party leadership.
Widely known and respected, Benedict maintained a broad circle of acquaintances throughout the region. He was regarded as a capable attorney, effective public servant, and influential political figure. Later in life, he continued public service as village attorney in Crosby, Minnesota.
Clifford L. Benedict passed away in June 1926 at the age of seventy-three. He was laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato, where he was remembered as a distinguished citizen whose career was devoted to public service and civic leadership.
