Dr. John W. Andrews was a prominent physician and civic leader in Mankato, Minnesota, known for his dedication to medical advancement and community service. Born in Illinois, he moved with his family to St. Peter, Minnesota, in 1856. Despite limited early advantages, he demonstrated strong determination and pursued his education through the Mankato Normal School, later teaching for three years at St. Peter High School.
His interest in medicine led him to advanced study at several of the nation’s leading institutions. He attended the medical department of the University of Michigan, graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1877, and later completed additional training at Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York City in 1880. Committed to lifelong learning, Dr. Andrews also studied in major European medical centers, including Berlin and Vienna, and regularly returned to leading hospitals throughout his career to remain current in medical and surgical developments.
After beginning his practice in Marshall, Minnesota, Dr. Andrews relocated to Mankato in 1883, where he built an extensive and respected medical practice. He became a leading figure in the medical community, serving as president of the Minnesota State Medical Society and maintaining active membership in other professional organizations.
In addition to his medical career, Dr. Andrews was deeply involved in civic life. He served on the Mankato City Council and was elected mayor in 1907. He also held leadership roles in local organizations, including the Board of Trade and various civic and social groups. A devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, he remained active in both religious and community affairs throughout his life.
Dr. Andrews was widely respected for his professionalism, energy, and commitment to both the health and growth of the Mankato community. His career reflects a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and service, both in medicine and public life.
