Capt. William Bierbauer was an early settler, businessman, and military leader whose life reflects the immigrant, entrepreneurial, and frontier spirit of early Mankato. Born in Bavaria, Germany, he received a good education and served in the German army before becoming involved in the Revolution of 1848 alongside leaders such as Carl Schurz. Following the failure of the movement, he emigrated to the United States in 1849.
After arriving in America, Bierbauer entered the brewing industry, first in New York and later in Milwaukee, where he worked with noted brewer Philip Best. In 1856, he came to Mankato with his brother Jacob and established one of the earliest breweries in Blue Earth County. What began as a small operation grew into a large and successful enterprise, becoming an important part of the city’s early commercial development.
Bierbauer was also known for his leadership during the U.S.–Dakota Conflict of 1862. At the outbreak, he organized and led a company of local men, serving as captain and going to the relief of New Ulm. His courage and leadership under fire were widely recognized, and his actions helped rally others during a critical time in the region’s history.
In addition to his business and military contributions, Bierbauer was regarded as a man of strong character, sound judgment, and a deep sense of honor. He remained active in his business and community for many years, and his brewery continued to be a well-known institution in Mankato.
Capt. William Bierbauer died on November 30, 1893, and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery. He was widely respected and remembered as one of the early builders of the community, whose contributions spanned business, military service, and civic life.
